It is a busy time at the BACN headquarters, with lots of hard work going on behind the scenes to bring our members the best educational opportunities, both via our social media platform and in-person at our annual autumn conference.
Last month, 100 registrants joined the BACN Zoom webinar with Cara Docherty and Natalie McCartney of BTO Solicitors LLP. They discussed the principles of consent, as well as the importance of recording consent. It is essential that aesthetic nurses have a robust consenting process, not only to ensure that patients are able to make informed decisions, but to protect the practitioner against complaints or claims. It was a very informative webinar, sharing effective consent strategies to empower aesthetic nurses. A recording of it can be accessed via the BACN member's area of the website.
The BACN has just started a new three-part series on social media. ‘The Power of Paperless’ Instagram Lives are in partnership with Aesthetic Nurse Software. The series will discuss everything aesthetic nurses need to know on how to take their clinics into the digital age. The first episode discussed paperless record keeping and covered issues such as compliance, recording consent and the secure storage of patient records.
Wolverhampton Council's trading standards officers carried out an undercover operation to identify businesses in the city who were not following the legal guidelines of the Botulinum Toxin and Cosmetic Fillers (Children) Act 2021. Businesses were sent letters advising on the legislation, then test calls were carried out using a 15-year-old who posed as a potential patient. Several businesses did not require ID for a consultation and three businesses were prepared to arrange a consultation despite knowing that the patient was under the age of 18. Hopefully other councils will follow Wolverhampton's example and carry out investigations to protect the public, especially those under 18 years of age who are protected by law.

The BACN has recently attended a stakeholder meeting with the Department of Health and Social Care, looking into how regulations should look like, and key stakeholders voiced their concerns.
I am looking forward to the BACN autumn aesthetic conference which returns to the Eastside Rooms in Birmingham on the 14th and 15th of September. It is the largest event dedicated to aesthetic nurses in the UK, with expert lectures and demonstrations, a large exhibition space and the opportunity to network with colleagues. Last year's conference received fantastic feedback from both delegates and exhibitors. Some of this year's confirmed speakers include Dr Rikin Parekh, Frances Turner Traill, Dr John Quinn, Dr Tom Decates and Alex Bugg from Web Marketing Clinic. We have already sold 150 tickets for the conference. Packages including a hotel stay and two-day conference tickets have been very popular and are now limited. If you haven't yet booked your ticket, please do not wait too long to do so as we are expecting this to be our largest event to date.

Some of the BACN regional groups have been holding coffee mornings for more informal meet-ups. These are a good way to meet other members in a relaxed environment and they have been popular with new members who perhaps have not yet attended a regional meeting or conference. Peer support helps to promote learning and develop our role as aesthetic nurses (Baker, 2020). The BACN regional meetings provide the perfect opportunity to network, learn more about specific treatments or areas of clinical practice and to discuss interesting case studies.
